    Stacks of Magazines

They're growing! They're under the bed! Agghh!

I can’t stand it. What is it with some women (I guess some men fit this bill too) and their desire to keep magazines, stack them up and 1) claim they’re going to read them or 2) save them for reference for ‘future ideas’?

I love my mom to death but she used to be a major ‘mag-hoarder’. I remember the stacks of Better Homes and Gardens. Higher and higher they climbed. It was quite a sight: “Mom, why the magazines,” I’d ask.

“Because I have ideas bookmarked and I like to go back and look at them,” she’d sweetly reply. Very well, I digress. But after today I’ve learned there’s no longer a reason to keep them. Away with the magazines! Introducing: Houzz.com.

Houzz is a Palo Alto start-up that is really starting to kill it. It’s a leading destination website for home design enthusiasts, professionals or homeowners. The site has over 450,000 hi-res images of anything you can imagine related to your home: basements, bedrooms, wine cellars, offices, kitchens, etc. And they have links to buy some of the materials and furniture they display. Basically designers and architects promote their work on the site. And the work is unreal.

That’s the short of it, but if you’re interior-design challenged like I am (I still have a blank picture frame on my wall), then you should check it out. One day I plan to build the greatest office in the world in my future house. But first I need a house and then I need the world’s greatest plan to do so. Hopefully that’s where Houzz comes in.

Thanks to the very talented Liza Hausman, Vice-President of Marketing for Houzz for stopping by and letting me know how the company operates and where they’re headed. You can check out the interview on the archived Spreecast here in the Tech and Biz Channel.

And Mom, Happy early Mother’s Day. I just ordered you a subscription to Better Homes and Gardens! (That’s a lie) – But you will get something nice, that won’t add any new clutter to the room.

As for my girlfriend and her ‘fashion’ and ‘celebriDirt’ mags…I give up.

    Alexander Renzi

    Alexander Renzi

I had a great discussion with an associate of Wharton Ventures today. WVP, as it’s called, is a student-run venture capital fund. Alexander Renzi was my guest today on the Spreecast Tech & Biz Channel . T&B is all about technology and business from those who are living it – and doing a pretty great job.

The Tech & Biz Spreecast highlights stories from top CEOs and founders of great companies. But today, my discussion with Renzi was about school, the Ventures program and much more. Renzi is thisclose to becoming one of these great business minds with a promising future as a CEO of some great company that hasn’t been developed yet. I’m convinced.

The Internet is growing so rapidly, is kinda freaky. Think back a decade ago when you were fighting to get your DSL connection to just ‘hang on’ and not timeout. I remember trying to stream video in college and use instant video chat. The result was about as good as the beer left in the keg from the party a week prior.

Check it out! Spreecast.comFaster speeds and better technology have given birth to amazing ideas. One of those ideas is Spreecast.

The concept of Spreecast is very simple: Broadcast together. Say you want to have a book club discussion, a Mad Men after show chat, or even a mock cooking show. All are possible with Spreecast – and the possibilities are endless.  All you need is a computer, an internet connection and a web cam. Head to Spreecast.com, sign up and you’re rolling.

With Spreecast, you control the show. You have the ability to bring participants on camera and share ‘producer controls’ with them. Up to four people can be on camera at once. You can also add questions to the screen from those participants watching your Spreecast. You can choose a public or private Spreecast.

CarWoo on Spreecast.comOnce the program is over, it is automatically archived and can be viewed whenever you’d like. It’s a great promotional tool for companies and organizations, but it’s also a great solution for getting your buddies together over beers and talking about how the Patriots lost to the Giants again (ouch, did I say that?). I’m a Vikings fan, so consider me nothing more than a messenger.

Spreecast was created by Jeff Fluhr, the founder and former CEO of StubHub. After StubHub was acquired by eBay in 2007, Jeff continued his entrepreneurial ways and eventually founded Spreecast last year. He has built an impressive team around him and the website is growing a rapid rate.

I was contacted by Jeff about four months ago. He was looking for someone who could conduct technology and business interviews with top CEOs and founders in the tech space.  I love when tech and biz collide. It was right down my alley, so I jumped aboard and am glad to have been given the opportunity.

That’s when the ‘Tech & Biz’ Channel was born. It’s been a great ride ever since we began. In the span of a few months, we’ve gotten some great interviews with some extremely talented and successful people. Tech and Biz allows everyday people access to the great business minds that create incredible companies. One thing I like to ask all the guests is if they have any advice for the young entrepreneur still trying to make it in the real world. The advice is invaluable. Just watch a few Tech and Biz Spreecasts and you’ll be amazed at some of the challenges the leaders have faced.

Spreecast has a lot of featuresA cool, new feature of Spreecast is the ability to embed an archived Spreecast into a website. So I plan to start adding mine to this blog from time to time.

But if you’re looking for a new way to communicate, give Spreecast a shot. You’ll be pleased at its ease-of-use and you’ll quickly find it is addicting and fun.

And if you’re a fan of a specific company and would like to ask the leaders of that company some questions, drop me a line here. We’ll reach out and see if they’re interested in coming on Spreecast and having a chat about their success.

Here are just a few Spreecasts in the Tech and Biz Channel. More are being added weekly. Be sure to check out the channel homepage and follow some of the latest!
