I just caught the tail end of the Shawshank Redemption the other night. What a great movie. It was at the part where Red (Morgan Freeman) was walking by the stone wall and the big oak tree to find the tin box Andy (Tim Robbins) left for him. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and download it. (I’d say rent it, but we’re in 2011).

Sadly, the tree was recently hammered by a thunderstorm. Here is the latest according to Accuweather.com:

The oak tree that was made famous by the movie The Shawshank Redemption was severely damaged by wind on Friday afternoon.

A thunderstorm moving through the area on Friday at around 2:30 p.m. EDT produced straight-line winds that damaged the tree according to Mansfieldnewsjournal.com. The tree had a rotten center that weakened it.

The storm caused a power outage and damage to other trees. The power was restored by 6 p.m. EDT.

The oak tree is near the location where Andy, portrayed by Tim Robbins, hid his treasure.

Since the movie, based on a short story by Stephen King, many people visit the tree and take photos, according to Mansfieldnewsjournal.com.

A tour of the area has been set up by the Mansfield-Richland County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The tour highlights scenes from the film including the Ohio State Reformatory prison and the oak tree.

The tree is located on private property. It is unclear if the entire tree will need to be removed due to the damage.

Man, I hope the tree makes it.

Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.

Not really. But Brian Monahan and I are holding down the fort at WFTV tonight (Sunday). Brian is our new meteorologist from WINK-TV in Fort Myers. If you have a chance to tune in tonight, we’ll be on Channel 27 for Eyewitness News at 10:00 and then over on Channel 9 for Eyewitness News at 11:00.

I also told him about my recent discovery of Doorstep Delivery. This is an ingenious website that allows you to pop in your zip code and get a menu items from dozens of Orlando restaurants. Then you enter in what you want, add some notes (ex. extra pickles on my hamburger), add a deliver gratuity – and BAM! The food arrives at your doorstep in less than an hour.

It’s simply genius for people like me who lack the desire to try and whip up something decent for dinner (especially after failing to get groceries).

Working for the weekend and having dinner delivered on my break. Not too shabby.

It’s funny to think it’s even Christmas morning. Living in downtown Orlando gives me very little sense that Christmas is even here. I’ve haven’t noticed any Christmas lights up or decorations (but it’s mostly tall buildings – so there are no trees, big yards or enough space to spread out a Nativity Scene). So I guess this year it sneaked up on me.

I spent my Christmas back in Minnesota last week after I flew into that snow storm. Now THAT’s Christmas. There’s no better Christmas than a white Christmas in my opinion. But after living in Tucson, Arizona and now Orlando, Florida – I’ve learned, no matter where you are or what the view and temperature is – Christmas is a good day to relax and be thankful. It’s been a good year for the most part. So Merry Christmas, I hope Santa brought  you everything you asked for.

    Made it.

What a journey. I really want to pressure wash myself of airports, cheap hotels, long lines, Delta cookies (but they’re still so damn good) and the various knots in my left shoulder blade.

I arrived home about noon today to a driveway that was BURIED. My parents were stuck at my brother’s house and were nice enough to pick me up at the airport when I finally arrived from Grand Forks International Airport (I just love saying it – it seems so ridiculous. I’ve seen homes that were bigger). I suppose Canada counts, so International works, I guess. Suffice it to say – no one was home to tackle the driveway. So that’s what we did.

It was actually pretty nice to move around for once. I’ve been sitting on a plane for days and I’m over it. So we snowplowed, shoveled, trudged, kicked and slipped our way around the property. All is well. Even my shoulder isn’t barking at me as it has been. Tomorrow will be a different story.

This recent storm was a doozie. There were cars in the ditch everywhere, the airport closed and even the Metrodome collapsed. Now that’s serious. I’ve learned the Vikings will play the Giants tomorrow night at 6:20 in Detroit. Favre claims he isn’t going to play. I find that hard to believe.

But all is well in Scandia, Minnesota. I can now continue what I came here to do – relax and enjoy family and friends – and fatten up about 5 lbs. Nothing is better than mom’s cooking. I’m heading back to the airport to collect Ali who arrives at 5:00pm from Phoenix. I’m sure she’ll think twice about ever wanting to return to this deep freezer. We’ll see.

What’s nice is that I feel like I’ve already been on vacation for a week based on the amount of miles I’ve traveled and the things I’ve seen. Grand Forks wasn’t Las Vegas – but it was a destination. I met some nice people at the hotel bar, Nelson from Medtronic who lives in Hugo (who loved the 44 oz. Ambers) and Marilyn from Michigan to was headed to see a friend in Seattle (I told her she just HAD to try Jagermeister since she’s never had it.  I learned the next day she had three shots on top of her 44oz Amber – Atta way, trooper!). The poor lady probably won’t make it to Seattle for awhile since a storm was brewing there as well. Polaris is probably hung WAY over today (see prior post). But this is stuff you just can’t make up. It makes life interesting.

Thanks to those who dropped a line to wonder where I was and how I was doing. Hopefully your weekend was delightful. My extended weekend continues right now.

    First task: Pressure washing.
