I just caught the tail end of the Shawshank Redemption the other night. What a great movie. It was at the part where Red (Morgan Freeman) was walking by the stone wall and the big oak tree to find the tin box Andy (Tim Robbins) left for him. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and download it. (I’d say rent it, but we’re in 2011).
Sadly, the tree was recently hammered by a thunderstorm. Here is the latest according to Accuweather.com:
The oak tree that was made famous by the movie The Shawshank Redemption was severely damaged by wind on Friday afternoon.
A thunderstorm moving through the area on Friday at around 2:30 p.m. EDT produced straight-line winds that damaged the tree according to Mansfieldnewsjournal.com. The tree had a rotten center that weakened it.
The storm caused a power outage and damage to other trees. The power was restored by 6 p.m. EDT.
The oak tree is near the location where Andy, portrayed by Tim Robbins, hid his treasure.

Since the movie, based on a short story by Stephen King, many people visit the tree and take photos, according to Mansfieldnewsjournal.com.
A tour of the area has been set up by the Mansfield-Richland County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The tour highlights scenes from the film including the Ohio State Reformatory prison and the oak tree.
The tree is located on private property. It is unclear if the entire tree will need to be removed due to the damage.
Man, I hope the tree makes it.
Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.
What a year it’s been for Tampa sports. The Lightning won the Stanley Cup, the Rays played in the World Series and now the Bucs are a game away from making the Super Bowl. That Super Bowl will be played right here in Tampa. If they beat the Packers on Sunday, they’ll have done something no team has done before: Played in the Super Bowl hosted by their own city. That would be amazing...
A few weeks ago I took the Phantom 2 Vision + out for a little flight time with my fiance’s family. The sun was setting in Brickell and there were plenty of people going about their daily business. But it was a good time to catch Brickell as it generally is: big, beautiful and busy. We caught a great sunset shot at 00:50. It was the perfect time to film in the early evening. It was a bit...
When I got my Phantom 2 Vision Plus from DJI my biggest concern was learning how to fly without crashing the thing. That would come relatively quickly (no crashes yet, knock on wood), and now I’m starting to take some great video with the Phantom 2 Vision Plus. But when it came to traveling with the Vision Plus, I have to admit, I didn’t know A) what the rules were for travel and B)...
Up in the Air: Brickell Key It was a great night for flying near Brickell Key in Miami, Florida. We had some friends in town from Tennessee along with my fiance’s parents – so we decided to break out the Phantom 2 Vision + Drone and get some good aerial video as the sun was setting. I’m still a bit rusty on the controls but am working to smooth out shots and learn the ropes. Our...
